BLUE
The problem when things fade in time
Is remembering some things sublime
So when we see the colour blue
We will smile and think of you
In your daggy denims and worn windcheaters
your face and hands so weather-beaten
Your healthy laugh and wry smile
Belying cunning plans all the while
Your stories and tricks with kids still linger
Such as ‘Stumpy’ and ‘Curly’ – your special fingers
Testing if the electric fence was sound
and dropping money on the ground
Good with animals and great with kids
But [unfortunately] no Oscar for recording those vids
You tried your hand with wool and trucks
and factory shiftwork and then milk trucks
But farming was always in your blood
Something about that sweat and mud
and machinery, animals and the land
and reciprocally receiving and lending a hand
The quiet ways you generously acted
the people your character attracted
Made all the difference for us
With Mum you toiled to make things good
and provided a loving family, shelter, security and food
And humble to the very end
I’m glad you were our mentor and friend
So I’m very proud to say
that you live on in us in various ways
So whenever we see the colour blue
We will smile and think of you.
